Mata Nui sights - Po-Wahi by IRON6DUCK Mata Nui sights - Po-Wahi by IRON6DUCK
I like deserts. Their scale and emptiness calms my mind. However these features also makes them a very hard biome to express in painting. plus, a desert is also generally flat, which makes for some dull silhouettes.

When I made this, I realized how different deserts are. I used to think about sand-dunes when brainstorming the word "desert". I didn't realise I was excluding large flat ground fields, rocky valleys, or the so iconic north-american rock formations of monument valley that most likely inspired Po-Wahi's rocks.
When I figured that deserts were so different I tried to implement the huge rocks along with sand-dunes because I wanted to see more sand-dunes in Po-wahi. But when I had filled the ground with dunes (sand-dunes are the worst thing to paint -.-, but a cool challenge), I realised it looked totally out of place, and decided to remove most of it.

It is interesting how, when you think about it, Po-wahi is actually a pretty surreal desert. it has lots of sand in the games, yet has very flat dunes. It also has the distinctive rock-formations which makes you think about the wild-west, and yet Po-Koro and Po-Wahi's background ambience also seem to draw inspiration from middle-eastern, Arabic elements. :)

 You gotta love Po-Wahi.

I love this. I imagined Bara Magna looking more like this than Po-wahi. But either way it's a great landscape. Just needs my Inninrrad blazing across it kicking up a huge plume of dust and sand! This is the exact kind of landscape that vehicle was designed to traverse. I'm kidding of course, it's perfect the way it is.  Its two things I love, landscape paintings, and Bionicle. Would totally hang this up in my house if I had my own place.

I cannot get enough of your landscapes for Bionicle, please please please keep it up!

I live in Arizona, and seeing the mountainous rock formations in the distance hits home for me. :D  Only thing missing is all the desert vegetation, but that's okay, this in Po-Wahi, not Arizona, haheheh. You did a really great job on this, and you are right, this does look surreal (Bionicle in-general is surreal, which is why I love it).

Another reason for me to be a Po-Toa, their biomes harken me back to home (be it deserts, or thick, rocky coniferous forests).

I envy your local nature. :) I'd love to see an actual desert. how wonderful. You are right, there isn't a lot of vegetation in Po-wahi.(It had a cactus in my image once, but it left.). It is interesting because, looking at Po-Wahi like this, I kinda like the absence of plants. Makes it look distinctive and otherworldly. :)

With this wonderful sight, I think it would be appropriate to have a small group of Po-Matorans sand surfing the dunes for fun. It would make a wonderful scene!

Preferably to do it before I can take the time to find and photograph the perfect dune to do such a scene....

Fedt fedt fedt! Argh, meget smukke, And. Jeg har en lidt jalousi!

You'll probably fight this on me... this is so far weaker than the rest of your landscapes. However, that could be the illusion of the cactus which seems just stuck on there in the foreground. It's distracting to me, and I think the piece could be stronger with it omitted.

Cactus is too much. Agreed. *Removed*. but "this is so far weaker"? .. that's.. well,.. It is as I said, Deserts are hard to illustrate :). The "quality" of an image does not at all line up with the "effort" put into it. My Onu-Ko-Koro Highway seems, in my own opinion, more fantastic than this one. But I had a much harder time here setting up the composition, rendering and adjusting colour than in the other. The Cactus was a very small detail. Easily introduced and easily omitted. (Like that word. Never heard it before. Useful.)

The cactus was distracting. Now I'm focusing on the details of the painting that make it magnificent. Much better, and well done :)

Okay, you need to get out of my head.

When I first saw this I thought someone had actually created the concept piece I've had in my head for the new Po-Koro within my fan fiction Bionicle universe.  The silhouette and layout of the scenery is so similar to what I have envisioned.  Still, this is beautiful.  I love the combination of rocky barren land and sand dunes dominated by massive rock formations.

There's one thing missing, though.  A tumble weed! :)  I joke, of course.

I have my own fan-fiction universe myself you know. However this is not part of it. Making Mata-Nui sights, or other original bionicle pieces, is like going to church for me :). It's a holy place you honour and respect. IMO when making fanfiction, you should honour the originality of whatever you grow the fiction from, and deviate from that as much as possible.

Somehow I doubt it'd have cactuses like that. It would probably have more fat, spiky ones. At least spikes. Or stripes. I think those two elements would for better in a Mata Nui scenery.

Po-Wahi is definitely a strange place. Very alien-like. And you managed to capture this very well.

And people are entitled to opinions :P It was meant ad constructive critiscm though. I really think giving it some kind of little spikes, or leaves, big or small, ringed with little thorns. Maybe give it some kind of comes too, though that may be too much :P

Wouldn't do that exactly, but actually I just removed it instead. When I added it to begin with I was very 50/50 about whether to keep it or not. Many pros and cons on each option, but after some reflection I changed my mind. It's mostly due to composition.. :p

Long live the cactus of Po-Wahi.

It looks angry...? You didn't like the robot thing or something? I thought it was one of the most brilliant and original ideas in science fiction or science fantasy ever personally. I also don't really have any problems with the more advanced urbanness of Metru Nui though. It felt natural that the Matoran's original home would be like that honestly. And some mystical stuff and ancient Polynesian-inspired architecture still remained, mixed with many other styles and tones. I agree that there could have been given more screentime to the mysterious, mystical-like things though. And some more character development, mostly of characters who weren't the Toa Metru, but I don't think they had much of a choice with the time they had, and because of the fact that they had to tell the Turaga's backstory.

I was very angry with the destruction of my favourite island. That is all :). That caught my attention at the time, but I got no beef with any of the other things from that event...

I was also very sad, but not angry. Turaga Nuju said it best in the MNOG: "In creation, there is destruction. In destruction, there is rebirth. There is no such thing as void; all things are in flux."
And in our hearts Mata Nui is still there. Plus we have about a thousand years of Mata Nui stories to tell through quality fan fiction, so let's get around to that :) I mean before the Time Slip. I would realy love to try and take on some of those stories.

Damn I love this. Are you going to do more Bionicle places? I'd love to see them if you do.

Also, I'm going to see what my Pohatu 2015 drawing looks like on this background when I'm next at my PC, I drew him MNOG style. Might just fit in :P

This is what I call Mata-Nui sights. That is, If I was on the island as a tourist and took photos of any kind of stuff I'd like. So far that just happened to be some scenery :)
